More storms, flooding threaten KY this week days after deadly weather

In the wake of deadly storms that swept through the commonwealth and killed at least 19, Kentuckians could see more severe storms this week, National Weather Service forecasters say.

The weather service has alerted that much of Kentucky has a risk of experiencing continued severe weather Monday and Tuesday.

The possibility for Tuesday tornadoes cannot be ruled out, forecasters said.

“Every area of the state may experience storms, but Western Kentucky is at a higher risk,” Gov. Andy Beshear said in a social media post Monday.

Beshear urged Kentuckians to be alert, keep their phones charged and have a plan in place to take shelter if needed.

“If you rely on a weather radio, find an alternate alert system,” Beshear said in the post. “NOAA is doing an update and these radios will be offline through (Wednesday).”

Gusty winds and hail are the primary threats for storm systems Monday.

The probability for storms is higher Tuesday, with damaging winds, hail, heavy rainfall and a few tornadoes possible.

Nearly all of Kentucky is listed as being under a “slight risk” or “enhanced risk” for these conditions.

This week’s storm setup potential is one that could worsen flooding problems, according to Chris Bailey, chief meteorologist with WKYT.

The potential for flash flooding will likely be pretty elevated in many areas with another one to four inches of rainfall across the state over a period of days.

Damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes are all possible with these rounds of severe storms, Bailey said.
