Death toll unchanged, damage assessments continue after Kentucky tornadoes
The death toll from Friday’s violent tornado storm remained unchanged Sunday evening after a day of damage assessments, said Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear.
Beshear posted a series of updates about the recovery efforts from the storm around 7 p.m. Sunday. The death toll remains at 19 — one in Russell County, one in Pulaski County and the remaining 17 in Laurel County.
Beshear said Sunday 10 people remained hospitalized with injuries from the storms. Three were in critical condition, while four had been upgraded from critical to fair, and three had been upgraded from critical to good.
Other updates from Beshear included:
- Kentucky Emergency Management teams are continuing to assess the damage from the storm. Beshear said the assessments will take days, and the assessments will be used in the governor’s application for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance.
- Families and business owners cleaning up damaged property are encouraged to document everything they come across. Beshear said it will help you with the application for FEMA assistance.
- Beshear encouraged people to donate to the Team Kentucky Storm Relief Fund. The money collected from the fund is first used to pay for victims’ funerals before being spent elsewhere.
