Storms, potentially severe weather headed for Kentucky. Here’s the latest

A storm system heading to Kentucky is expected to create potentially severe weather Thursday through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storms will develop along a stalled frontal boundary Thursday and linger in the region through Saturday. The NWS said severe weather will be possible all three days, but the biggest threat for severe weather is Friday.

Friday’s storms aren’t expected to arrive until the afternoon and evening hours, NWS meteorologists said in the area forecast discussion. The main threat is gusty winds, but some hail is possible.

Much of Kentucky, save for far eastern counties, is in the slight risk zone (level 2 of 5) of the NWS’ severe weather outlook. Slight risk implies organized severe thunderstorms with varying levels of intensity.

Tornadoes are not likely.

Thursday’s chances for severe weather have weakened as the storm travels eastward, according to NWS meteorologists. However, thunderstorms are still expected through the night, and some gusty, sub-severe winds and hail are possible.

Most of the state is under a marginal risk (level 1 of 5) for Thursday’s storm. The NWS said marginal risk includes severe storms with limited organization and longevity.

After Friday’s potentially severe weather, storms this weekend are expected to bring only some thunder, lightning and showers. NWS meteorologists said the rainfall totals aren’t expected to cause any flooding issues, but ponding on roads is possible.

Most of the state is under a marginal risk for severe weather except for far southern counties, which are a level higher in the slight risk zone, according to the NWS.

A cold front is expected to arrive in the region sometime Tuesday, creating a drier atmosphere, according to NWS meteorologists.
