AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Cold front will lower Lexington highs to low 70s midweek, arriving Wednesday.
- Nighttime lows might dip below 50°F Wednesday, offering a clear fall feel.
- Monthly averages stayed warm; October may run 3–4°F above normal if pattern persists.
An incoming cold front is expected to lower the high temperatures in Lexington into the 70s next week, giving hope that fall weather has arrived.
The cold front is not expected until the middle of next week. The National Weather Service said projected high temperatures for Monday and Tuesday are around 80 degrees, but by Wednesday it will only reach the 70s.
The projected high temperature for Wednesday and Thursday in Lexington is 71 degrees, according to the NWS’ seven-day forecast for Lexington. The low temperature on Wednesday night is expected to be below 50 degrees.
Brian Schoettmer, a meteorologist for the NWS, said the temperature will warm up slightly heading into the weekend, but it will still feel comfortable and seasonal.
“Definitely a cooler feel to the air mass after we’ve been seeing these solid 80s these past several days,” Schoettmer said. “Getting into October, you’re certainly starting to think about more fall-like weather, and it looks like we get a taste of it middle to last next week.”
The average temperature for Lexington in September was 70.3 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees above normal, according to the NWS. While a 1.2-degree difference might not sound like a lot, Schoettmer said it’s not insignificant.
“To be above normal in September is still pretty warm, if you think about it,” Schoettmer said.
There were four 80-degree days in September, which is above the average for the last five years. It was also the third year in a row where the average temperature in September was 70 degrees or warmer.
The normal temperature for Lexington in September is 69.1 degrees, according to the NWS. Meanwhile, the normal temperature for Lexington in October is 63.4 degrees.
Schoettmer said if the current weather pattern continues, the average temperature in October could be 3 to 4 degrees above normal, which is significant. There is still the possibility of seeing some 80-degree days in October.
There were five 80-degree days in October last year, according to the NWS.
“I would not take it off the table yet,” Schoettmer said. “There is some data that still shows another strong ridge building in, which is what gives us hotter weather this time of year, but then there are other models that disagree and keeps us in a slightly cooler pattern.”
