  • NWS forecasts a precipitation band Friday producing rain, wintry mix or snow.
  • Lexington sits on a sharp cutoff; 76% chance of a dusting, 8% chance >1 inch.
  • Winter advisory 7 a.m.–5 p.m.; up to 1 inch possible, roads may be slippery.

Kentucky is forecast to get another round of winter weather Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

A band of precipitation is expected to sweep through the commonwealth Friday ahead of a cold front. The NWS said the band should produce rain showers, wintry mix or snow along the snowstorm’s path.

Western Kentucky is expected to remain mostly dry with a few rain showers, while Eastern Kentucky should get mostly snow. The NWS said there is a sharp cutoff along the storm’s path of areas that will get snow and areas that will remain mostly dry.

Lexington falls right on the edge of areas that could get snow or wintry mix, according to the NWS. There is a 76% chance that Lexington gets at least a dusting of snow and an 8% chance it gets more than 1 inch.

The most likely timeframe of the snowstorm is between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., according to the NWS. If Western Kentucky receives snow, it’s not expected to happen until Friday night.

The NWS issued a winter weather advisory for Lexington and other Northern and Central Kentucky areas from 7 a.m. Friday to 5 p.m. Friday. The advisory says snow accumulations of up to 1 inch is expected for most locations, which could make roads slippery and hazardous for the morning and evening commutes

“It should be probably a dusting, one inch or less, but this can impact our roadways and folks need to be aware,” Gov. Andy Beshear said during his weekly news briefing.

After the snowstorm departs the region Friday, there are no chances for snow in the NWS’ seven-day forecast for Lexington. The next chance for precipitation is Tuesday night — a 30% chance of rain.

The temperature is expected to be frigid to start the weekend before progressively warming up through the middle of next week. The NWS’ forecast projects the high temperature to reach the mid 20s Saturday before rising into the 50s Monday through Wednesday.

The warmer temperatures will likely put a major dent in Lexington’s snow and ice pack that has lingered for almost two weeks. As of Wednesday, the snowpack remained at 2 inches after receiving around a quarter-inch more of snow Tuesday, according to the NWS.

Lexington also received a trace of snow Monday. A trace is defined by the NWS as snowfall that never accumulates above 0.1 inches because it melts as it lands on the ground.

Lexington received 4.9 inches of snow in January, which is slightly above the normal amount of 4.7 inches, according to the NWS.
