Wintry mix expected Monday morning in KY. Here’s what Lexington could get
AI-generated summary reviewed by our newsroom.
- Wintry mix will bring snow, sleet and freezing to parts of northern Kentucky.
- Areas north of I-64 could see slushy accumulations; impacts possible on bridges.
- Lexington faces 3% chance of measurable snow and 69% chance of a light glaze.
A round of wintry mix is expected to fall Monday morning in Kentucky, according to the National Weather Service.
The wintry mix will bring snow, sleet and some freezing to the region, primarily in Northern Kentucky. The NWS said there is a chance the wintry mix could dip down south to Central Kentucky, but it’s uncertain where the storm’s southern edge will cut off.
Areas north of Interstate 64 could get minor accumulations of slushy snow, while it’s unknown what precipitation types areas along and south of the interstate will get. There is a 3% chance that Lexington gets measurable snowfall, and a 69% chance of getting ice, according to the NWS.
Surface temperatures in areas along Interstate 64 are expected to remain slightly above freezing, which will limit any accumulations, the NWS said.
“Current road temps are in the upper 30s/lower 40s, so impacts from icing on roadways looks to be fairly limited to mainly air-exposed bridges/overpasses,” the NWS said in the area forecast discussion. “However, any heavier snowfall rates that occur later this morning north of the I-64 corridor could easily overcome these ground temps and cause a few road issues.”
Bath, Bourbon, Elliott, Fleming, Franklin, Harrison, Henry, Nicholas, Oldham, Rowan, Scott, Shelby and Trimble are under a winter weather advisory until 10 a.m., according to the NWS. Fayette County is not included in the advisory.
Areas south of the storm’s southern edge are expected to receive light rain, the NWS said. The wintry mix is expected to transition to rain later in the morning or early in the afternoon.
“Impacts from this morning’s wintry weather should come to an end by mid-morning as surface temperatures will warm up to well above freezing by mid-late morning,” the NWS said in the area forecast discussion.
