Fair immigration reform urgent
It is unfortunate and ridiculous that an issue as important as immigration reform has become such a polarizing force in our nation’s politics.
What was created through a bipartisan feud will now require a bipartisan solution. This solution should not only secure our nation from outside threats, but also treat the members of our community with compassion and respect. We should be calling on Sens. Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul and our local legislators to pass comprehensive immigration reform that has everyone’s best interests in mind.
The people affected by our poor immigration system, which hasn’t seen compassionate legislation in 30-plus years, are our neighbors and friends, and contribute to our society. We don’t need individuals like state Sen. Ralph Alvarado using the same fear-inspiring rhetoric that Donald Trump uses to make a mockery of immigration reform for his own political gains. It is up to us to reach out to our congressional representatives to reform our immigration system so that it works for all.
