Criminals easily buy guns
It is against the law in this country for a felon to possess a firearm. And yet, it is all too easy for felons to purchase firearms.
In Kentucky, only federally licensed gun dealers are required to do a background check before selling a gun. Private sellers have no obligation to do so, making it all too easy for felons to buy guns in our state. Because of this, it is no surprise felon Ray Powers of Murray, Kentucky was found with 18 long guns and eight handguns.
We should be outraged there are so few efforts made at keeping firearms out of the hands of criminals.
In the name of public safety, we require 16-year-olds to pass a driving test before getting behind the wheel, yet we don’t have sensible policies requiring a background check before buying a gun?
Requiring background checks for all gun sales would not affect law-abiding gun owners and would dramatically decrease the number of criminals who purchase and possess firearms in Kentucky.
