Reject rhetoric at UK

I applaud the University of Kentucky’s president and deans in their recent effort to speak to the seismic shifts in our political environment. I hope that they’ll continue to remind students, staff and faculty that while the college should wholly embrace inclusivity, it should not accept hateful rhetoric or endorsements of violence.

The university must remain welcoming so that academics can inform and educate our citizenry. At the same time, it must not become a structure of appeasement in order to avoid confrontation, but instead continue to stand amidst the chaotic shifts in society as a place of solace and sanctuary. The university must rise above political differences in order to move closer to the highest ideals of our enlightenment.
