Focus on the draft, not sob stories
I am so looking forward to another night of the NBA draft. Get your popcorn, kids. They should change the name to “First 48,” though. This should be one of the happiest days in these young men’s lives. But all we hear is how one’s dad is in jail or mom is on crack. Or how they were abandoned as kids. Or one of their family members was gunned down in gang violence.
The stories of black players who didn’t have a violent life or white players who grew up in violence never get covered. I’m waiting for Keith Morrison of “Dateline” or someone from “48 Hours” to show up and interview the players.
Give me a break, ESPN. Young kids are watching. Stop going for ratings with gloom-and-doom stories. Cover the draft and the teams and leave the violence for the news.
