Tell it like it is

In reference to those who oppose the removal of Confederate statues and memorials on historical grounds, I have a compromise.

Leave the statue. Change the marker to read, “So-and-So, supporter of slavery so long as he held the whip. Traitor to the United States. He took up arms against his own people.”

If you like history, go for it.
