In defense of teachers

As a teacher with 23 years of service in public schools, I find Gov. Matt Bevin’s comments about “gaming the system” extremely disrespectful to me and the thousands of educators across Kentucky.

During my career, I have worked with many education professionals and I can tell you with certainty that we are dedicated to our students. We don’t “hoard” our sick days; we show up for school because we are doing what is best for our students. We show up because we know best how to meet the needs of our students and provide them with the best quality education.

In addition, by not using our sick days, we save our school districts a great deal of money, because if we are there they do not have to pay substitutes. We are not “gaming the system” by not using our sick days. We are simply trying to provide students with the best possible education and playing by the rules that have been in effect since we were hired.
