Confederate historian offered no ideas for statues
Historian Anne Marshall’s piece on Civil War statues offers no certain solution. I get that some of those statues offend people, me included, but her words suggest no stopping place as to who’s statue or what monument gets the ax.
Do we ask the Italians to tear down the Roman Coliseum given its slave connection? That list gets real long in the context of world history.
I admit not being too bothered when they ditched the Marxist statues in former communist countries, given my prejudice against communism. My solution is to move Civil War statues to a historical place with logical signage.
Cheapside Park should continue to represent the history that occurred there; same for Civil War battlefields. The recent news showing the Confederate soldier’s statue destroyed in North Carolina was disrespectful and unwarranted.
Recent news videos of protests of these historical statues and several errant ideologies show quite a few people who need something else to do (like a job?).
Let’s hear more from historians in proactive ways, not just to get on a bandwagon.
