How’d we get here?
I recently watched “The Last Waltz,” a great documentary by Martin Scorsese about “The Band.” It is centered around The Band’s last concert and was released in 1978. The concert features guest appearances from most of the big rock musicians from the 1960s and 1970s. It’s an incredible group of musicians and, more than that, creative people and my generation’s revolutionary heroes.
Which brings me to my point: What happened to my generation?
We lived through so many positive, progressive changes in our world. We lived through the civil rights movement and the women’s rights movement.
We watched men walk on the moon and die in Vietnam. We watched students murdered at Kent State and African-Americans beaten in the streets of our cities.
We lived through Watergate and 9/11. We, and others, elected Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States.
And now we seem to be back to where we started, with the backward racial division and discrimination of President Donald Trump and Roy Moore.
What happened to us?
