Thurston for judge

Lindsay Hughes Thurston is a dedicated volunteer who has spent hours in service through her work on Chrysalis House and Dress for Success Lexington boards. She is a highly qualified district court judge candidate through her work as a former Fayette County attorney and assistant U.S. attorney, where she prosecuted cases of domestic violence and crimes against children.

Thurston knows the law and will enforce it as it is written with respect and compassion. She believes elected offices should be earned and not passed down among family members. The actions of her opponent, Judge Kim Wilkie, show he doesn’t believe that.

At a recent forum, Wilkie referred to himself and the other candidates as “hookers who were selling themselves for votes.” He thought his comments were funny. They were not. His comments were degrading to women and unprofessional. I’m voting for Thurston.

Messer wrong pick

I disagree with the Herald-Leader’s endorsement of Libby Messer for Fayette County Family Court judge.

Messer was appointed by Gov. Matt Bevin, and his staff wouldn’t have given her name to Bevin without knowing she would check all his ultraconservative boxes. I’m especially concerned about the potential for discriminatory practices toward the immigrant and LGBTQ communities.

Her background as a prosecutor sets the wrong tone. Family court doesn’t operate in absolutes; there are many gray areas. It’s a place to help people, not punish them. Her mailing making her seem tough on the opioid problem is inappropriate for a family court judge. It’s possible to protect children without tearing them from their parents.

Lexington needs a family court judge who looks at all sides and information. I don’t believe she has the compassion or the experience that takes.

Shafer leads and serves

I recommend Sandy Shafer to represent the 11th District on the Urban County Council. She has previously served on the council for 13 years and has proven she knows how to get the job done. She is a true servant-leader, with genuine concern for individuals and her city. She has owned businesses, been a leader in youth activities, held leadership positions in her church, played in the University of Kentucky band and received many awards.

I have lived in several communities and attempted to support the local governments there. I am convinced that Shafer is the best person I have known who will most fully serve her district and community.
