Letters to the Editor: A recommendation for a new state fossil

Official state fossil

I believe the time has come for the Kentucky legislature to propose that Sen. Mitch McConnell be selected to replace the brachiopod as the state fossil. His heart and soul are already petrified and his brain is well down the same path.

Country over party

Articles of impeachment will be drawn up and voted on soon. There are a number of potential charges and criminal infractions from which members of Congress can choose. Obstruction of justice and obstruction of Congress are continuing to happen in real time. Solicitation of political information against an opponent and interference in our electoral process from a foreign government in exchange for congressional-appropriated funding is bribery and is still happening. (Where’s Rudy?)

Five hundred legal scholars have signed a letter citing enough evidence to justify the impeachment of the president of the United States.

I urge Rep. Andy Barr, Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Rand Paul to support the process of impeaching Donald Trump now. Any interference or dismissal of the facts will be seen as further evidence of wrongdoing and, sadly, their complicity. History will not be kind to the likes of traitors.

I demand my legislators defend the Constitution and put country over party. Nobody is above the law.

Nutrition global problem

Many people will be feasting during the holidays, eating nutritious meals that may include turkey, pot roasts, vegetables, and pies, while there are families in the world suffering from malnutrition. People shouldn’t feel guilty whenever they consume a meal, but they should be aware of these global issues.

Chronic malnutrition is an issue that causes stunting in cognitive and physical growth. Every year, 165 million children won’t reach their full potential due to malnutrition. This harms economies, global health, and more.

Nutrients children receive are vital through the first 1,000 days after conception and will determine their development. It’s important to recognize that it’s not only about the calories a child gets after birth. Healthy habits during pregnancy are imperative. The nutrients of a mother during breastfeeding are also just as essential. Micronutrients like iodine, folic acid, iron, and vitamin K are necessary for the mother and child.

As a country with so much influence and power, we need to aid nutrition efforts. House Resolution 189 is a bipartisan resolution introduced by Republican Rep. Roger W. Marshall from Kansas. Rep. John Yarmuth is the only representative from Kentucky that has co-sponsored it so far. We urge Reps. James Comer, Brett Guthrie, Thomas Massie, Hal Rogers, and Andy Barr to co-sponsor this resolution.

Vote against walls

How fitting that the legacy of President Donald Trump would seem to be a failed wall designed to keep immigrants out of America. I’m hoping that in the 2020 elections we reject the walls of Trump that separate us. A line from a poem on a plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty states: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free”. In the early 20th century, the Statue of Liberty was a welcoming site for millions of immigrants for which the words’ welcome would certainly apply. In Trump’s America, we build a wall to keep immigrants out. The pictures on our TV screens have shown us huddled masses of immigrants, tired, poor, and yearning to be free. And yet some of us would join Trump in building his wall to keep those yearning for freedom out. In the 2020 election, we will see how many of us are for walls and how many of us are for those people yearning for freedom.

Coronation or kicked out?

If President Donald Trump is not removed from office, we might as well just present him with a crown, for that is the message we will be sending to him, his supporters and his family: You now have the permission of the American people to do whatever you want, regardless of the laws, regardless of the oath of office you took, regardless of common decency. You are now, at the confirmation of the United States Senate, officially above the law. And with that in mind, we now present you with your crown. Your Majesty … (senators take a knee).
