Letters to the Editor

Letters: ‘What an outrage.’ The hypocrisy of McConnell’s push to fill RBG’s seat.

‘An outrage’

Sen. Mitch McConnell is such a hypocrite. On the very day Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died (Sept. 18), McConnell said the McConnell-led Senate would take a vote to affirm President Donald Trump’s nominee to take Justice Ginsburg’s place on the Supreme Court. McConnell might even take the vote on the Senate floor sometime during the six week period before the election. What an outrage.

Now is the time for Kentuckians to get smart and come to the aid of our state and country by voting for Amy McGrath. To save our country from becoming a full-blown dictatorship, voters must elect Joe Biden president, make sure Democrats hold onto the House of Representatives and take back the Senate.

I cannot think of a better way to honor the great life and service of Ruth Bader Ginsburg than to make sure our next president sends his nomination for her replacement only when he officially takes office in 2021. The importance of voting this fall cannot be overstressed.

Not politics. Racism.

In 2016 a black man, the president of the United States, was denied his right to fill a Supreme Court vacancy. The reason the white Republican party gave was that it was months to the election.

They wanted the people to have a say in the election.

People had already had a say. Barack Obama was elected for a second term by the people. A high percentage of people of color voted for him. It was his right and theirs to have that position filled. Not just Obama’s rights were violated but all the people of color who voted for him were denied their rights. Their voices were ignored.

Now we have a racist white president, Donald Trump, with days to go until the election. The same racist Senate leader, Mitch McConnell, is racing to fill a vacancy. Though their behavior will further divide this country, Republicans do not care.

This is systemic racism. You can say it is just politics, but the politics of the Republican Party are racist.

If one of your children, caught doing something wrong, would say, “Well, they would do it if they could,” that would not be acceptable as an excuse. Why would we accept this from a leader?

Be scared

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is gone and we are in trouble. There is now a conservative majority sitting on the highest court in the land and we should be very afraid. To allow President Donald Trump and Sen. Mitch McConnell to stack the deck will be a disaster. It will be a disaster for women’s rights, a disaster for the many who cannot afford private health care, for the immigrants who have helped build this country. The list goes on and on. Our democracy is in deep peril thanks to Trump, and to allow him to push through another conservative nominee will mean the end of our country as we know it. It will no longer be the land of the free but a land of the greedy, unscrupulous, bigoted men who have destroyed what was once a great country.

Bias on display

I am deeply disappointed that I can find no link to comment on the Herald-Leader’s recent op-ed by Guy Kemper regarding the controversy surrounding the events taking place in Leslie County with regard to Frontier Nursing and the removal of the stained glass window that was taken from the chapel

Had Mr. Kemper bothered to do any research, rather than make comments when he admitted he had no real knowledge of the situation, I’m sure we could have been forgiving. But, his failure to actually research the legacy of Mary Breckinridge or to seek the viewpoint of the citizens she served is appalling.

I suppose that is in line with the current mainstream media policy. How dare someone be objective. Let’s go with inflammatory

The newspaper’s failure to at least fact check him before publishing only shows its slant and its failure to be an accurate, reliable, credible, objective source for news

His “opinion” reeks of bias and uninformed one-sidedness. The Herald-Leader has lost credibility here.
