Race issues not solved
I’ve read many comments on the perplexing problem of either leaving the artwork by Ann Rice O’Hanlon in the University of Kentucky’s Memorial Hall covered or not.
One writer mentions that the articles in the Herald-Leader are forcing folks to think about racial problems versus art.
I agree that it is focusing on the real problem — integration.
The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and President Lyndon Johnson helped pass the civil rights laws in the 1960s, but it’s going to take more than laws to fix the problem.
It might take one or two generations not only to comply with those laws but also to accept in our hearts and minds that black people have the same rights as white people and that the only difference is the color of their skin.
Years ago, newsman Peter Jennings hosted a program for children and showed them a small vial of a substance that made the difference between the skin color of white and black people. Otherwise, we all have the same body parts, hearts and minds.
Since the UK artwork has instigated discussion on this important cultural point, let’s keep the conversation going.
