Save Mathews Garden
The Lexington Council Garden Clubs, which encompasses six garden clubs in Lexington, would like to make a plea to save Mathews Garden. We are active in the community, allocating grants to community garden spaces and sponsoring the biannual Lexington Garden Tour, as well as Lexington in Bloom.
We have become very alarmed at the loss of green space on the University of Kentucky’s main campus. Not only has building construction destroyed former green spaces, but ornamental grasses and flower beds also have been replaced with pavers and grass. This makes it all the more crucial that students, faculty and staff have a wooded area in the middle of campus to walk through and feel closer to nature. Who can resist smiling at the jaunty yellow of celandine poppies in spring? There is great biodiversity in that small space.
We are also aware that the law school has several other viable options for additional space in lieu of destroying a valuable resource.
