Louisville features worth copying

Our community leaders frequently make trips to places such as Charlotte, San Antonio, Asheville, Charleston and Chattanooga, and bring back wonderful ideas for Lexington. I was in Louisville recently and saw a couple of very good ideas for us to adopt.

The ZeroBus is an all-electric, zero-emission vehicle that makes moving around easier on one’s conscience. Another thing that caught my attention were the plaques on Fourth Street which call attention to the civil rights era and the protests that led to the passage of the city’s public accommodations ordinance. Rather than hide from our heritage and legacy, why not educate ourselves and our visitors to the progress that’s been made (though not too fast, mind you) on the civil rights front?

It’s not in our power to bring a riverfront to downtown Lexington, but that’s a pretty nice thing about Louisville, too.
