News that University of Kentucky President Eli Capilouto’s salary has been below the average of flagship universities in neighboring states is not surprising.
However, the dramatic raise of 48 percent granted to him at one time by the Board of Trustees on June 24 is obscene.
Sadly, there are needy students whose scholarships have been cut or eliminated as a result of the recent budget cuts for state universities enacted by state government. Some of these students are not going to be able to continue their education as a result. Their education is essential for the better health of Kentucky.
If Gov. Matt Bevin is sincere about cutbacks, then he should expand his unauthorized actions against University of Louisville President James Ramsey to Capilouto and reduce the latter’s salary back to its previous level until state funding is restored.
