Chuck Eddy: I am a fiscal conservative who will work for everyone in the Sixth District.

I am running for Congress in the Republican Primary. I am a fiscal conservative who will work for the middle class, working poor and marginalized Kentuckians.

I’m a traditional moderate Republican like Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Eisenhower and our own Kentucky Republican Senators John Sherman Cooper and Thruston Morton. They were two of the 29 Republican Senators who voted for the 1964 Civil Rights and 1965 Voting Rights Acts.

Our current Congressman voted for the bill that would have gotten rid of the Affordable Care Act: eliminating healthcare for 24 million Americans, ending protection for pre-existing conditions for all Americans and ending free birth control for women, among other things. By preventing unplanned pregnancies, you prevent many abortions. The effort to get rid of free birth control for women was flat stupid. Senator John McCain’s late night vote from his sickbed, thumbs down, stopped it from happening.

The incumbent voted for the corporate tax giveaway. It was supposed to pay for itself and add jobs and capital investment, and build the economy. Instead, big companies spent the majority of their tax cut on stock buybacks. It’s adding between $1.5 and $2 trillion to our national debt.

We must repeal the permanent corporate tax cut, except for companies with annual revenue under $100 million, who are using their tax cuts wisely. Large companies must also pay back to the US Treasury the amount of money they have used to buy back their own stock since the tax bill passed. We also need to make the Individual tax cut permanent and restore the deductions reduced or eliminated to pay for the corporate tax cut.

I’m a Christ Follower. I don’t say “Christian”. “Christian” has been used by people with decidedly non-Christian words and behavior. My faith drives me to treat people of all faiths, ethnic groups, immigration status and sexual orientation and identity equally. As a traditional Republican I welcome immigrants from all lands that have built and are building our country. I support a path to citizenship for all Dreamers.

I grew up outside Philadelphia in a white neighborhood, next to a Black neighborhood. Our public schools were mostly integrated, but our residential areas really weren’t. I was raised from a young age to treat all people the same no matter race or religion.

We, as a nation, must confront our mistakes about race, and we must repent and reform. The murder of African-Americans by police at 2 1/2 times the rate of white Americans like me must end. We must change the way we do policing. We must do it rapidly.

I support a public/private partnership to extend healthcare to all Americans. We are the only developed country that does not have this. Your zip code and your income should not determine whether or not you have healthcare. We must protect rural hospitals and doctors.

The current crop of Republican executives and legislators have turned their backs on science. We are being ravaged by the Covid19 Pandemic because our leaders ignored the warnings of scientists and public health leaders.

Both South Korea and the United States had the first reported case of COVID-19 on the same day, Jan. 20. As of June 17: 280 South Korean COVID-19 deaths; 117,728 American COVID-19 deaths. South Korea’s leaders fought quick and smart. We didn’t. This blood is on the hands of our leaders. Our national leaders failed.
