If you had trouble sleeping last night, you were not alone!

All over Lexington, homes were buzzing with excitement in anticipation of the first day of school for the more than 41,000 students and 9,000 employees who returned to Fayette County Public Schools campuses this morning.

There’s just something magical about the start of the school year – captured in the grins on social media feeds, zipped inside matching lunchboxes and backpacks, and tightly laced up in shoes that haven’t yet stepped in puddles.

It smells like the whiff of wax from a new box of crayons, and it sounds like the crisp pages of a notebook being opened for the first time. It’s a day when corridors resonate with laughter, and classrooms ignite with the energy of young minds ready to explore.

I vividly remember my first day of middle school – a mix of nerves and excitement as I stepped into an unfamiliar world. Although I usually ate breakfast at school, my grandma made sure I had a hot breakfast at home that morning. Whatever else she served, it undoubtedly included her homemade buttermilk biscuits and “Brer Rabbit” syrup – two of my favorites.

After attending a small magnet elementary school, I entered sixth grade at Judson Middle – the largest of the three middle schools in my hometown. The halls seemed endless, and the faces were new. But there was a familiarity about the sense of wonder in the air. In every classroom, I felt a mixture of anticipation and curiosity about the adventures that awaited me.

Little did I know that day marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and leadership. The experiences I had in those classrooms — the friendships formed, the challenges conquered, and the knowledge gained — shaped the path that led me to where I am today. That school year taught me that education is a gateway to opportunities that expand our horizons in ways we can’t yet imagine.

That’s exactly the experience I want for every single student in the Fayette County Public Schools — an education beyond expectation. I wholeheartedly believe that learning is not merely a classroom activity, but an expedition of discovery, growth, and enlightenment that extends beyond the walls of our schools. This belief is what led me to become a teacher and brought me to Lexington.

Fayette County Public Schools is committed to pushing boundaries, setting new standards, and creating an environment where every student can thrive, succeed, and surpass their own expectations.

In the ever-evolving landscape of education, we recognize our students are growing up in a world that demands adaptability, creativity, critical thinking, and a profound sense of empathy. Our FCPS Portrait of a Graduate is a promise to equip our students with the tools they need to excel, not only academically, but also as responsible global citizens and compassionate human beings.

Our FCPS teachers and staff have demonstrated unwavering dedication to nurturing the minds and hearts of students. Their passion, innovation, and commitment to fostering a positive learning environment create spaces where students can flourish.

Our families are partners in this journey, shaping the experiences and aspirations their children have. Working together, we will inspire them to set ambitious goals and equip them with the skills necessary to turn those dreams into reality.

Our students are the heart of FCPS. This year is an opportunity for them to embrace curiosity, cultivate resilience, and explore their potential in ways they never thought possible. There is no limit to what they can achieve.

I invite our entire community to embark on this school year united in our pursuit of an education beyond expectation for each student. Let us be bold in our aspirations, relentless in our pursuit of excellence, and steadfast in our commitment to their success.
