Kentucky athletes show support for bullied boy after video goes viral

A video showing a Tennessee boy’s anguish over being bullied at school went viral over the weekend and has resulted in thousands of messages of support and invitations from pro and college athletes, including some from the University of Kentucky.

In the video posted to Facebook and Twitter, Keaton Jones tearfully describes the abuse he receives from classmates and pleads for it to stop, while also providing encouragement for other kids who might be enduring similar treatment.

“People that are different don’t need to be criticized about it. It’s not their fault,” Keaton says. “But if you are made fun of, don’t let it bother you. Stay strong, I guess. It will probably get better one day.”

Athletes who have reached out to Keaton include Tennessee Titans tight end Delanie Walker, former NFL wide receiver Donté Stallworth and University of Tennessee wide receiver Tyler Byrd, who tweeted that he and some of his Volunteers teammates plan to visit Keaton’s school in Knoxville on Tuesday.

In a tweet on Sunday, Kentucky baseball player Kole Cottam offered support for Keaton and an invitation to a game in Lexington next year.

“If you’re ever up in Lexington come out for a game and meet the team!” Cottam tweeted. “If not, we play UT at UT and I know our guys would love to see you there! Stay strong!”

Former UK basketball player Tod Lanter invited Keaton to a game in Rupp Arena.

“I’d love for you to be my guest at Rupp Arena if you and the family have any interest in making the trip,” Lanter tweeted. “Stay strong buddy! Thank you, Keaton, for being an inspiration of the strength for us all.”
