Every step the Centre College men’s soccer team takes this postseason is a new one.

Friday brings the Colonels’ first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament’s Final Four.

Centre (20-3-1) takes on the nation’s No. 1-ranked team, Amherst (Mass.) College (18-1-2), at 5 p.m. at Greensboro, N.C. The second semifinal in Greensboro, at 7:45 p.m., pits Tufts University of Medford, Mass. (18-2-2) against Calvin College of Grand Rapids, Mich. (23-1-1). The championship match is scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m.

Both matches will be broadcast live online at NCAA.com.

Centre, which never previously in six NCAA Tournament appearances had advanced past the second round, brings a 14-match winning streak into Friday’s game.

The most recent four wins have come with a backup goalkeeper. First Team All-Southern Athletic Association goalie Tate Johnson was injured during the league tournament. Sophomore Haydon Korfhage made his second career start in Centre’s NCAA Tournament opener against Kalamazoo. Centre won that match 1-0, then went on to defeat John Carroll, 3-1, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-2, and Montclair State, 3-2 in overtime, to reach the national semifinals.

In Amherst, Coach Jeb Burch’s Colonels face a program that has been here before. The Mammoths won the national championship in 2015 and have also reached Final Fours in 1997 and 2008.

Amherst is led by sophomore forward German Giammattei, who has 23 goals this season.

Senior Alexander Garuba also has 23 goals, to lead Centre.

Friday’s match is the first meeting ever between the two schools.
