Need a sports fix? Lexington radio station will air classic Reds, NFL games.

While sports enthusiasts are suffering from withdrawal due to the lack of live competition brought on by the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, one local radio station is stepping into the void with a plan to help mitigate the loss.

Lexington’s WLXG this week will begin airing re-broadcasts of classic Cincinnati Reds games as well as classic NFL playoff games on channels 1300 on AM and 92.5 on FM. Reds games will air at 7 p.m. every Friday beginning April 10. WLXG has not yet determined which games will be broadcast.

NFL games will air at 8 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays beginning with the 2009 NFC Wild Card matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, April 9.

WLXG’s NFL broadcast lineup will feature several historic games, including Super Bowl I between the Packers and Kansas City Chiefs.

The station will also air the 2020 NFL Draft live over three days beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 23.

Other notable matchups on WLXG’s NFL broadcast schedule include Super Bowl XXIII in 1989 between the San Francisco 49ers and Cincinnati Bengals, Super Bowl XLII in 2008 between the New York Giants and New England Patriots — in which Eli Manning and the Giants ended New England’s bid for an undefeated season — and the 2006 AFC Championship, in which Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts defeated Tom Brady and the Patriots.

WLXG’s broadcasts of both the Reds and NFL games can be streamed live on the station’s website at WLXG.com. In an email to the Herald-Leader, WLXG Program Director Shawn Seay said more past NFL games will be made available after May 28 if sports are still on hiatus at that point. He said it’s also possible the station will air historic college basketball and football games down the road.
