Three EKU athletes, three staffers isolated after positive COVID-19 tests
Three Eastern Kentucky University athletes and three athletics staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, EKU Director of Athletics Matt Roan announced Thursday.
“The health and well-being of our students, faculty and staff are our primary concern,” EKU said in a news release. “We value our entire campus community’s privacy and will limit information that could further identify any individual.”
Eastern Kentucky, like other colleges across the state including Kentucky and Louisville, has been hosting voluntary workouts on campus for athletes in a number of sports.
EKU’s release said the affected individuals have been isolated and the athletics department is amending schedules as necessary for voluntary workouts.
Eastern’s administration is working in conjunction with the Madison County Health Department to trace and notify the contacts of those who received positive test results.
The school said it has identified the spaces where these individuals were located and engaged a specialty contractor for professional cleaning specific to COVID-19 that is in line with Centers for Disease Control and prevention guidelines.
Eastern Kentucky is scheduled to open its football season Sept. 3, with other sports set to begin play around the same time.
