Kentucky’s canceled PGA event to host charity golf tournament in October
Originally scheduled to play out this week in Nicholasville for the third time, the PGA Tour Barbasol Championship was canceled in April because of the coronavirus pandemic. The tournament is scheduled to return in 2021, but it will still have a presence in Central Kentucky this year.
On Wednesday, organizers announced that the Barbasol Championship will host a tournament at Champions at Keene Trace in Nicholasville on Oct. 15-16 with proceeds benefiting five local charities: All God’s Children, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, the Kentucky Region of the Make -A-Wish Foundation, Refuge for Women and the Woodhill Community Center.
“During this time of global uncertainty, it’s imperative for us to continue supporting our amazing local philanthropic community and the children and families they serve,” Barbasol Championship tournament director Bryan Pettigrew said in a press release. “The critical services and programs they provide, to those most in need, are counted on now more than ever.”
On Oct. 15, the festivities will kick off with a reception and a dinner featuring cocktails from PGA Tour events around the country. That will be followed by entertainment and a silent auction. The charity tournament will be played Oct. 16 with a scramble format and shotgun start and will be followed by an awards ceremony.
The Barbasol Championship’s charitable arm, Caddie127, has helped raise money for local charities during each of the tournament’s first two years in Kentucky.
“We’re committed to promoting, strengthening, and advocating for these fine organizations by all means available to us,” Pettigrew said. “Along with the rest of the world, we look forward to life getting back to a state of pre-coronavirus normalcy as soon as possible.”
