Garrett Nussmeier Has Emotional Reaction to Being Drafted by Chiefs
Garrett Nussmeier entered the NFL Draft as one of the more intriguing prospects in this year's quarterback class for several reasons.
He built a solid resume as a starter for LSU Tigers over the past two seasons. However, a down year for the team slightly impacted his draft stock after he was once viewed as a potential top option ahead of the 2025 college football season.
At the NFL Combine, Nussmeier was also diagnosed with a cyst on his spine that caused oblique pain, which contributed to his struggles.

Clearly, some teams had concerns, as Nussmeier slid all the way to the seventh round - but he didn't go undrafted.
With the No. 249 overall pick, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Nussmeier, placing him in a quarterback room alongside Patrick Mahomes and Justin Fields.
The NFL shared a video of Nussmeier receiving the call from Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, and he was clearly emotional as the moment he'd worked for finally became reality.
It's obviously going to be tough for Nussmeier to find immediate opportunities in Kansas City, with Patrick Mahomes firmly established as the face of the franchise.
However, he could see meaningful reps during training camp and the preseason as Mahomes continues to rehab a knee injury. As of now, Justin Fields is expected to start if Mahomes misses any time.
If that happens, it could open the door for Nussmeier to take on a QB2 role during offseason practices and throughout the preseason.
At LSU, Nussmeier totaled 52 touchdowns and 7,699 yards over his collegiate career. He waited his turn, spending five seasons with the program - including three as a backup - before earning his opportunity.
