Lamine Yamal Sends Warning After Spain Reach 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

Lamine Yamal and Spain will meet Lionel Messi and Argentina in the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup final in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday, July 19. Messi, 39, will come face to face with Yamal, his 19-year-old Barcelona successor, for the first time. Well, unless you count the time Messi bathed baby Yamal for a charitable photoshoot in 2008. The script writes itself, and Yamal provided the log line.

“New York, we’re coming for you,” Yamal captioned his Instagram carousel from Spain’s 2-0 win over France in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Argentina joined Spain in the final by defeating England 2-1 in the other semifinal in Atlanta on Wednesday, July 15.

Messi and Yamal made a decisive impact in their respective semifinal matches. Yamal cleverly drew the penalty that led to Mikel Oyarzabal putting La Roja up 1-0 in the 22nd minute, while Messi assisted both of Argentina’s goals in a comeback victory.

The media drawing parallels between Messi and Yamal over the next four days won’t be anything new for Yamal, as that has been his experience for the better part of the past four years.

"I think that I respect him, in the end, for what he's been, for what he is to football, and if we ever meet one day on the field, there'll be that mutual respect," Yamal said on “60 Minutes” last November. "In the end, because we are players, and because for me, he's the best in history, and he also knows that I am a player and that I respect him.

“So it's a mutual respect, and I think we both know that I don't want to be Messi, and Messi knows that I don't want to be him. I want to follow my own path, and that's it. I have no intention of being - of playing like him or wearing the No. 10 that Messi wore, or anything like that.”

While Messi and Yamal are the headliners, the true storyline will be Messi and Spain’s stalwart backline. Messi is the Golden Boot leader with eight goals and four assists in his record sixth World Cup. Spain have conceded one goal and recorded six clean sheets at this World Cup. La Roja are also undefeated (21-6-0) when Yamal starts a match. Something’s gotta give.

Argentina, in the country’s seventh men’s World Cup final appearance, are vying to become the first repeat men’s World Cup champions since Brazil in 1958 and 1962. Spain, meanwhile, are looking to go 2-0 in men’s World Cup final appearances, last winning in 2010.
