2024-25 bowl scores: All the results after 47 postseason games
College football’s 2024-25 bowl season wrapped up with renewals of most fans’ traditional favorites but also ushering in some major changes.
The pageantry of the Cotton, Fiesta, Orange, Peach, Rose and Sugar bowls remained but those games were now components of the College Football Playoff’s road to the championship. The Fiesta, Peach, Rose and Sugar served as quarterfinal games in the inaugural 12-team playoff, with the Cotton and Orange hosting the semifinals.
The playoff got underway with first-round games at campus sites Dec. 20 and 21. The quarterfinals were New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day and Jan. 2. The semifinals were Jan. 9 and 10. The national championship was decided Jan. 20 in Atlanta, with Ohio State beating Notre Dame for the title.
Twelve playoff teams were seeded and bracketed: No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Georgia, No. 3 Boise State, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Penn State, No. 7 Notre Dame, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 9 Tennessee, No. 10 Indiana, No. 11 SMU and No. 12 Clemson.
Another major difference this year — at least locally — is the absence of Kentucky from bowl season. The Wildcats, who finished 4-8, did not achieve bowl eligibility for the first time since 2015.
The commonwealth’s two other Football Bowl Subdivision schools both took care of business in 2024.
Louisville, which closed an 8-4 regular season by drilling Kentucky 41-14, earned a berth in the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. The Cardinals defeated Washington 35-34 in that game.
Western Kentucky closed the regular season 8-5. The Hilltoppers played in the Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 18 against James Madison and were defeated 27-17.
Every one of the 42 bowl games and five unnamed playoff contests was televised nationally. Kickoff times ranged from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. EST. And 84 teams started with a chance to finish their season with a trophy.
