Bjorgolfsson delivers golden goal for Kentucky in C-USA men’s soccer finals
Eythor Bjorgolfsson’s golden goal gave the Kentucky’s men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory against Florida Atlantic and its second Conference USA Tournament championship.
Bjorgolfsson scored in the 94th minute as the fourth-seeded and 15th-ranked Wildcats (14-1-4) defeated sixth-seeded Florida Atlantic on Sunday at the same Transamerica Field in Charlotte, N.C., where UK capped off its 2018 C-USA regular-season title with the first C-USA Tournament championship in program history.
UK, which also got a goal from Marcel Meinzer on Sunday, earned the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field will be announced at 1 p.m. Monday.
Kentucky had advanced to the finals with a 3-0 shutout of top-seeded No. 14 FIU on Friday. Florida Atlantic was playing in the C-USA finals for the first time in program history after its defeated reigning national champion and second-seeded No. 4 Marshall with a 3-1 upset in the semifinals.
Kentucky has never lost to Florida Atlantic in 12 all-time meetings.
