Kentucky’s men’s tennis team found itself in a familiar spot Saturday: down 1-0 after the doubles point in an NCAA Tournament match. And much like they have the past two seasons, the Wildcats found a way to prevail.

UK rallied from behind — again — to defeat Stanford 4-3 at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex and advance to the NCAA quarterfinals for the sixth time in program history. Kentucky is 11-1 this season in matches that end with a 4-3 score.

“We’ve been in this situation a lot this season,” head coach Cedric Kauffmann said. “I think we’re one of the best teams in the last 30 minutes of matches.”

UK lost the doubles point four times in last year’s NCAA Tournament on the way to a national runner-up finish, and the Wildcats had followed that script in the second round this year, too.

Against Stanford on Saturday, the match was tied 3-3 with only No. 6 singles still ongoing. There, the pressure was on after Kentucky freshman Charlelie Cosnet dropped the first set against Aryan Chaudhary. He, too, rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

“It was awesome. Everyone was there for me, so that was helpful,” Cosnet said. “To have my brothers around me was just awesome.”

The Wildcats also got singles victories from Alafia Ayeni, Josh Lapadat and Taha Baadi.

“We’re always together and we just don’t want it to end,” Kauffmann said after yet another successful UK rally. “We wanted to get to Orlando and maybe get one more match than last year.”

A program-record crowd of 903 helped cheer the Wildcats past the Cardinal.

“They were loud and passionate,” Kauffmann said. “This is why we love Kentucky.”

Kentucky, the tournament’s No. 4 seed, will face fifth-seeded Virginia at 5 p.m. EDT Thursday in Orlando. The Cavaliers defeated Duke 4-0 to reach the quarterfinals.
