2023 SEC Baseball Tournament bracket revealed. View Kentucky’s potential path.
The University of Kentucky baseball team wrapped up its most successful regular season since 2017 on Saturday and gets two days of rest before opening postseason play in Hoover, Ala.
The Wildcats (36-17 overall, 16-14 Southeastern Conference) are the No. 8 seed in the 12-team SEC Tournament, which gets underway Tuesday with four single-elimination matchups. Tuesday’s winners advance to an eight-team double-elimination bracket to settle the league’s championship and automatic NCAA Tournament bid Wednesday through Sunday.
Florida will be the No. 1 seed after taking two of three games at Kentucky over the weekend to clinch the SEC regular-season championship as the winner of the East Division. The Gators (42-13, 20-10) are ranked No. 2 in the nation. They finished off the 20th-ranked Wildcats with a 5-2 win Saturday at Kentucky Proud Park.
West Division winner Arkansas (39-15, 20-10) will be the No. 2 seed. No. 3 seed LSU (42-13, 19-10) and No. 4 Vanderbilt (37-17, 19-11) joined Florida and Arkansas in securing byes to the double-elimination rounds.
Kentucky’s first-round opponent will be No. 9 seed Alabama (38-17, 16-14). The Wildcats and Crimson Tide square off Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. EDT (SEC Network).
During the regular season, Kentucky took two of three games from Alabama when the teams played March 24-26 at Tuscaloosa, Ala. Kentucky won 4-3 in 12 innings on that Friday and 9-5 on Saturday before falling 4-3 on Sunday.
The Kentucky-Alabama winner will take on Florida on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Florida broke open a scoreless tie with four runs in the seventh inning on the way to its 5-2 victory in the regular-season finale in front of an announced crowd of 3,884 in Lexington.
Kentucky starter Austin Strickland (3-1) allowed one hit through six innings before the Gators broke through.
Grant Smith homered and Reuben Church drove in a run for the Wildcats, who were limited to six hits.
