Blue Jays call up ex-Cat Andy Burns for his first trip to majors
The Toronto Blue Jays called up former University of Kentucky player Andy Burns and optioned right-hander Ryan Tepera to Triple-A Buffalo. It’s Burns’ first trip to the majors.
Burns, who batted .279 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI in two seasons at UK in 2009 and 2010, is a utility player who has started at five different positions in 27 games for the Bisons this season. That includes second base, third base, shortstop, left field and right field.
Burns transferred to Arizona after two seasons with the Cats, but he never played there and was drafted in the 11th round of the 2011 draft by Toronto.
Burns was hitting .250 with two home runs, 10 RBI and three stolen bases for Buffalo. He was tied for first in the International League with nine doubles.
Burns batted .286 with one home run, four doubles, six walks and eight RBI in 25 games for Toronto during spring training.
