UK sports: Softball’s Prince throws no-hitter; baseball defeats George Mason

Meagan Prince threw her first-career no hitter on Saturday in the opening game of a doubleheader, a 10-0 victory over South Dakota, on the final day of the Campbell/Cartier Classic in San Diego.

Kelsey Nunley followed that up by having a perfect game broken up on a single with one out in the last inning as UK rolled to another 10-0 victory, this time over Texas Tech.

The Cats finished their road trip out West with a 9-2 record to start the season.

Prince had nine strikeouts Saturday, just two off her career high set last season against Florida A&M. The Martin, Tenn., native pitched five innings and only allowed one baserunner, which got on via an error.

Katie Reed and Nikki Sagermann both hit home runs and Abbey Cheek added two triples and seven RBI in the wins.

Baseball

Freshman Tristan Pompey and junior Gunnar McNeill each hit two-run home runs and senior pitcher Dustin Beggs only gave up one run, leading No. 25 Kentucky (1-1) to an 8-6 win over George Mason on Saturday at USC Upstate’s Harley Park.

Pompey, whose blast was his first career hit, was the first UK player to collect his first career hit as a homer since Luke Maile in 2010.

Luke Becker added a two-run double in the ninth inning.

Beggs worked six innings and allowed four hits and one run. He walked one and struck out five. After allowing a one-out RBI single in the fourth inning, Beggs settled in to retire eight consecutive hitters to end his outing.

JaVon Shelby tied his career high with three hits, including a pair of doubles.
