Jaren Shelby withdraws UK commitment, will play at Florida junior college
Tates Creek outfielder Jaren Shelby, an All-State first-team selection by the coaches, will enroll at State College of Florida instead of attending the University of Kentucky this fall. Rivals.com first reported Shelby’s decision.
Shelby, who hit .378 and had 12 home runs en route to All-City Player of the Year honors, originally committed to UK but told the Herald-Leader enrolling in a junior college would give him more options going forward.
One of those options is again being draft eligible sooner. Shelby went undrafted in last week’s MLB amateur draft.
He’ll still be close to family. His brothers John and Jeremy are “right down the street” from the college, Shelby said.
“It’s like God set it up perfect,” Shelby said.
