Coronavirus puts pause on UK’s plans to play Michigan in London
Takeaways from Kentucky Coach John Calipari’s 50-minute teleconference on Tuesday:
▪ The coronavirus has put a pause on planning for UK’s trip to London in December to play Michigan. A decision will be made, probably by June, about moving the game to a location closer to UK and Michigan.
▪ Calipari said he is teaming with Kroger and Fayette County schools to provide groceries for 400 families for four weeks. That time may expand.
▪ Probably four or five UK players will enter their names in this year’s NBA Draft. The NBA may postpone and/or move the annual Combine and draft.
▪ The 2019-20 team was special. Of the unity of purpose and “vibe” this season’s team had, he said, “I felt this was the vibe my best teams had.” A moment later, he added, “my hope is this becomes one of the favorite teams” of the Calipari era.
▪ As for the coronavirus leading to restrictions on recruiting in 2020 and 2021, Calipari said he was grateful that UK was “ahead of the game” and was in “pretty good shape.”
▪ Dontaie Allen was capable of playing in the final month of the season. But Calipari was reluctant to use up a season of eligibility for such a short period of time.
▪ Players keeping in condition despite gyms being closed will be important. Calipari advised doing sit-ups, push-ups and running in place at home.
▪ There was no rift between coach and player involving Calipari and Ashton Hagans. “Look, I love coaching competitors … ,” Calipari said. “He and I are fine. I love him.”
▪ If Immanuel Quickley returns to UK next season, he could play some point guard.
▪ No player has tested positive for coronavirus. One player had the flu, which led to a test. The test was negative.
