Kentucky leads the nation in first-round NBA Draft picks. Here’s the list.
It had to sweat it out a little, but Kentucky remains the leader in all-time first-round NBA draft picks.
The Wildcats had two players, Tyrese Maxey and Immanuel Quickley, selected in the first round of the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday, giving it 54 all-time first round picks, 31 which were drafted under current head coach John Calipari.
North Carolina had one player, point guard Cole Anthony, selected before Kentucky had any players picked, briefly tying it for the lead at 52. Anthony was picked 15th overall; Maxey was selected six picks later at No. 21 by the Philadelphia 76ers, giving Kentucky the advantage once more.
Quickley was taken four picks after Maxey, going No. 25 overall to the Oklahoma City Thunder, who traded the selection to the New York Knicks. North Carolina did not have another player selected in the first round after Anthony, giving UK a two-player lead over the Tar Heels.
Alex Groza, selected by the Indianapolis Olympians with the No. 2 overall pick in 1949, was the first UK player elected in the first round of NBA Draft, which began in 1947 when the league was known as the Basketball Association of America.
Pro Basketball Reference credits Kentucky with 57 first-round picks, but three of those players — LeRon Ellis, Chris Mills and Rodrick Rhodes — did not complete their college basketball careers at UK and are not recognized by the school or NCAA.
Here is every UK player chosen in the first round, beginning with the most recent draft.
