A COVID conundrum: Kentucky looking for Vegas opponent after Ohio State pulls out
Kentucky’s game against Ohio State in the CBS Sports Classic scheduled for Saturday has been canceled because of positive COVID-19 tests within the Ohio State program, it was announced Thursday.
CBS is working with UK Athletics to try to find an opponent to replace Ohio State. UK’s game against Ohio State will not be rescheduled, the Buckeyes announced.
The positive COVID-19 tests were the first for Ohio State this season. The Buckeyes also did not have a positive test last season, according to The Columbus Dispatch.
All Ohio State team activities have been canceled, the school announced. Players and staff will continue to be tested for the coronavirus.
Earlier Thursday, Penn State canceled its game against Virginia Commonwealth because of a positive COVID-19 test within the Nittany Lions’ program.
Ohio State learned that one undisclosed key member of the starting lineup tested positive and would miss the game against Kentucky, The Columbus Dispatch reported.
As of Thursday afternoon, Kentucky still planned to travel to Las Vegas in hopes of playing against a replacement opponent, UK announced.
The CBS Sports Classic will also have a game pitting North Carolina against UCLA.
