Oscar Tshiebwe has won a truckload of trophies. Here’s the full — and historic — list.
Oscar Tshiebwe is going to have a spectacular trophy case someday.
It will also be a historic one.
The University of Kentucky big man received the Wooden Award on Tuesday to complete a sweep of the six major national player of the year honors presented each season in men’s college basketball.
In addition to the Wooden Award, Tshiebwe collected the top honor from The Sporting News, the National Association of Basketball Coaches, The Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association and the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
Tshiebwe is the first Wildcat to win all six awards. The only UK player to previously win the Wooden Award was Anthony Davis in 2012. Davis won five of the six awards, missing out on only the NABC honor that went to Michigan State’s Draymond Green that year.
Tshiebwe becomes the 28th player to sweep every award since all six were first presented in 1977, but the first in Southeastern Conference history.
Tshiebwe is the second player coached by John Calipari to earn that distinction, joining Marcus Camby of UMass in 1996.
Tshiebwe averaged a team-best 17.4 points and a nation-leading 15.1 rebounds per game this season. He became the first Division I player to average at least 15.0 points and 15.0 rebounds since Drake’s Lewis Lloyd and Alcorn State’s Larry Smith each did so during the 1979-80 season, and the first major-conference player who averaged at least 16.0 points and at least 15.0 rebounds since Bill Walton at UCLA in 1972-73. He became the first Wildcat to do it since Bob Burrow averaged 19.1 points and 17.7 rebounds in 1954-55.
Tshiebwe was the only major conference player who averaged at least 1.6 blocked shots and 1.6 steals per game during the regular season. He also became only the third player in UK history to amass at least 500 rebounds in a season. Tshiebwe finished the year with 515.
He concluded the season with 16 straight double-doubles, the longest streak since complete game-by-game rebounding records were kept dating back to 1969 for the Wildcats. He totaled 28 double-doubles this season which is a UK single-season record.
