An update on Jayden Quaintance’s potential for a return as NBA stock takes a hit
With the college basketball regular season drawing to a close, Jayden Quaintance is still sidelined for the Kentucky Wildcats.
And it doesn’t sound like he’ll be back on the court anytime soon.
At his weekly press conference Thursday afternoon, UK head coach Mark Pope offered no new timeline for a potential return to play for Quaintance, who has missed the past nine games for the Wildcats with knee issues and is starting to see his NBA draft stock slip.
“We started him on just a very, very, very light — not even return to play — just a little rehab, and there’s just a little bit of swelling that came back,” Pope said. “So we’re managing that. But it’s not imminent right now.”
Kentucky will play at No. 14 Florida on Saturday, with the winner of that game heading into the final three weeks of the regular season at No. 1 in the SEC standings.
Also on the sidelines with no timetable for a return is sophomore wing Kam Williams, who was a starter for the Wildcats before suffering a broken foot during the win over Texas on Jan. 21. He has undergone surgery for that injury, and Pope said after that procedure that there was an “outside chance” he could return to the floor this season.
With Quaintance seemingly so far from returning to the court and Williams on crutches, has Pope considered officially ruling either (or both) out for the season?
“No,” he said Thursday. “Because they’re massively important to this team and they’re difference-makers for us, for sure. We’re going to take ’em if we can get ’em.”
Pope then added: “And if we didn’t have this conversation every day, what would we talk about?”
Quaintance, who had surgery for a torn ACL in March, made his UK basketball debut in the Wildcats’ 78-66 victory over St. John’s in Atlanta on Dec. 20, tallying 10 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in 17 minutes off the bench and sparking Kentucky to a comeback in the second half.
The 6-foot-10 forward played in just three games after that.
He had just two shifts on the court — and played only seven minutes total — in UK’s 99-85 win over Bellarmine three days after his season debut. He then played a season-high 24 minutes in Kentucky’s 89-74 loss at Alabama in the SEC opener and made his first start for the Cats in what turned out to be a 73-68 upset loss to Missouri four days later.
Across those three games, Quaintance had a total of 10 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, one block and six turnovers in 49 minutes on the court.
Following the Missouri game, Quaintance returned to the sidelines due to swelling in his surgically repaired knee, according to Pope, who confirmed two weeks ago that he was in “full shutdown” mode, as far as on-court work. The 18-year-old has continued to receive treatment on his knee in the five weeks since he last appeared in a game for the Wildcats.
Before the Tennessee game in Rupp Arena last Saturday, he was out on the court about two hours prior to tipoff putting up free throws, but that was the extent of his physical activity.
Quaintance was the highest-rated addition out of the transfer portal for Kentucky last spring, coming in at No. 10 in the 247Sports rankings for the 2025 cycle after emerging as one of the nation’s top young defensive players as a freshman at Arizona State last season.
The injury issues have led to some questions over Quaintance’s draft stock. He was universally regarded as a lottery pick in this year’s NBA draft, but he fell nine spots to No. 18 overall in ESPN’s latest update Thursday morning.
ESPN draft analyst Jeremy Woo noted in that update that NBA scouts “presently have more questions than answers” regarding Quaintance’s status as a top prospect amid the injury woes.
“Quaintance’s defensive upside and ability as a lob threat should keep him in the lottery mix, but barring a return this season, he won’t be able to strengthen his case until the predraft process begins,” Woo wrote. “His limited body of work — averaging 9.4 points and 7.9 rebounds last season — points to a wide draft range.”
Kentucky (17-7, 8-3 SEC) has just seven games remaining in the regular season. The Cats will play at No. 14 Florida at 3 p.m. ET Saturday on ABC.
