Mark Pope’s Kentucky basketball program is in the market for a starting point guard this offseason.
And one of the best floor generals in the country will be available for the Wildcats to pursue.
On Wednesday morning, BYU guard Rob Wright III became the latest big name to join the NCAA transfer portal pool. Wright averaged 18.1 points, 4.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game for the Cougars during the 2025-26 season.
Wright started all 35 of BYU’s games this season and shot 41% from 3-point range on 139 attempts. He scored 10 or more points in 32 of BYU’s 35 games this season, and also led the Cougars with 34.8 minutes played per game.
Wright, who was an All-Big 12 Third Team selection, is expected to be one of the highest-ranked players on the move this offseason. He began his college career at Baylor, averaging 11.5 points and 4.2 assists per game as a freshman during the 2024-25 season. Wright was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team for his efforts at Baylor.
The 6-foot-1 Wright, who is originally from Delaware, previously said he intended to return to BYU if he was to play college basketball in the 2026-27 season.
“If I’m in a college jersey, I will be attending BYU, for sure,” Wright said after the Cougars lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Texas on March 19.
Wright’s outlook has changed, and Kentucky could stand to benefit.
Pope’s Cats will target a starter-caliber point guard in the transfer portal. UK’s projected starting point guard from this past season, junior Jaland Lowe, has already announced his plans to transfer. Lowe played in only nine games for UK during the 2025-26 season due to a series of right shoulder injuries that required season-ending surgery in January.
That’s not the only change that’ll be occurring in the UK backcourt.
Kentucky has also lost freshman guard Jasper Johnson to the transfer portal. Leading scorers Otega Oweh and Denzel Aberdeen, both seniors, will also be gone. Oweh is potential NBA draft pick this year, while Aberdeen entered his name in the portal Tuesday morning, though he would need a waiver from the NCAA to play a fifth year of college basketball under the current rules.
UK is still waiting on a stay-or-go decision from Collin Chandler, but Kam Williams will be coming back to play for the Cats in the 2026-27 season.
Kentucky also has a high school commitment from Mason Williams, a four-star point guard in the 2026 recruiting class. Williams is the son of new UK assistant coach Mo Williams, a former standout at Alabama who went on to become an NBA All-Star and has been the head coach at Jackson State for the past four seasons.
