Several five-star basketball recruits playing at Paul Laurence Dunbar on Friday
Several of the nation’s top high school basketball recruits will be at Paul Laurence Dunbar on Friday night for a showcase that will include an intra-city game featuring the No. 1-ranked Bulldogs.
The one-night Thoroughbred Classic tips off at 5 p.m. with Dunbar — the state’s top-ranked team — hosting Tates Creek. The Bulldogs (19-4) defeated the Commodores (4-17) by 32 points on Jan. 12.
Junior guard Taveion Hollingsworth is averaging 21.6 points per game this season for Dunbar, which is 17-2 against in-state competition and has won six straight against 11th Region teams.
The national portion of the Thoroughbred Classic begins at 7 p.m., with a game between Athlete Institute (Ontario) and Quality Education (N.C.). Five-star prospect Thon Maker, a 7-footer and one of the top seniors in high school basketball, plays for Athlete Institute.
The nightcap at 8:30 p.m., will feature Prolific Prep (Calif.) and Advanced Prep International (Texas), two of the most talented teams in the country.
Prolific Prep senior Josh Jackson is considered the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2016 and has narrowed his recruiting list to Arizona, Kansas and Michigan State. DraftExpress.com already projects Jackson as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
API’s roster includes two of the best juniors in the country: Trevon Duval and Billy Preston. Both are considered top-five players in the class of 2017 by 247Sports, which ranks Duval as the No. 1 point guard in the class. Both players have scholarship offers from several major programs.
Tickets for Friday’s showcase are $15.
