Calipari to be focus of ESPN ‘30 for 30’ series
University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari will be the subject of a 30 for 30 documentary, an ESPN publicist confirmed Tuesday.
The TV special is in production, but ESPN could not confirm when it would be broadcast.
David Scott of ESPN, who co-authored a pair of books with Calipari and is a former editor of CoachCal.com, posted Tuesday on Twitter that the documentary would come out this fall.
ESPN could not confirm details about who would direct or narrate the documentary, the nature of the subject matter or the title.
ESPN Films’ Emmy-nominated documentary series was designed to commemorate ESPN’s 30th anniversary by producing 30 films from some of today’s finest directors. The series is now in its eighth year and has produced more than 100 episodes.
No University of Kentucky coach or athlete has previously been the subject of a 30 for 30 documentary.
UK’s men’s basketball program was previously featured by ESPN with its All-Access Kentucky series during the 2012-13 season.
Calipari has been coach at UK since 2009 after previous head coaching stops at the University of Massachusetts, the NBA’s New Jersey Nets and the University of Memphis. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last summer.
