Kentucky women’s basketball picks up second 2024 commitment from a familiar place

The University of Kentucky women’s basketball team has landed its second high school commitment for the 2024 recruiting class.

Tanah Becker, a 6-foot-1 wing out of Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has committed to the Wildcats, a post on the academy’s girls basketball Instagram page confirmed Monday.

UK head coach Kyra Elzy and her coaching staff offered Becker a scholarship on Feb. 25, following the Wildcats’ 103-55 home loss to No. 1 South Carolina. She committed the following day.

Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Becker is a product of the Lincoln Prep basketball program in the Ontario Scholastic Basketball Association and the Nike circuit’s Kia Nurse Elite AAU. She graduated high school in Canada in 2023, but attended Hamilton Heights this year. In her sole season with the Hawks, Becker is averaging 12 points per game on 43% shooting from the field, as well as 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 3.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game while being a 62% free-throw shooter.

Hamilton Heights head coach Melvin Williams told the Herald-Leader via email that Becker’s work ethic will translate well to the college level.

“Tanah is a great person and going to be a good player at Kentucky. Tanah works extremely hard on and off the court. She’s there early before practice and stays late after practice. It has been a privilege to have coached Tanah.”

Becker is the third Hamilton Heights alumnae to commit to Kentucky women’s basketball, following former Cats Treasure Hunt and Jazmine Massengill. The SEC’s 2024 Defensive Player of the Year, Kamilla Cardoso (South Carolina), and former Louisville and Duke standout Elizabeth Balogun are also Hamilton Heights graduates.

Per Basketball Manitoba, Becker was a FIBA Americas silver medalist in 2020 with the Canadian National 16U team, and named an all-star at both the WNBA Basketball Without Borders Girls Camp in Las Vegas and the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix last year. She was selected to the BioSteel All-Canadian Game, the Canadian equivalent to the McDonald’s All-American Game, in 2023 and 2024.

Becker joins 6-5 center Ramiya White out of Butler Traditional (Louisville) in the Wildcats’ 2024 recruiting class.

All current members of Kentucky’s roster except fifth-year guard Emma King have the option to return for another season in 2024-25. Senior guards Eniya Russell and Maddie Scherr and forwards Nyah Leveretter and Ajae Petty all have the choice to exercise their COVID year of eligibility.

Tanah Becker, a 6-foot-1 wing player originally from Canada, is the second player in the class of 2024 to commit to Kentucky women’s basketball.
