Mystics confirm former Kentucky star Georgia Amoore will miss first WNBA season
Former University of Kentucky All-America point guard Georgia Amoore will miss her first pro season with the Washington Mystics, the franchise confirmed on Friday afternoon.
Amoore, who sustained an ACL injury in her right knee during a training camp practice at the end of April, underwent surgery and will miss the entirety of the 2025 WNBA season. This news follows the Mystics’ initial reporting of the injury, and still does not specify whether a ligament was torn.
The point guard, chosen sixth overall in the 2025 WNBA draft, suffered the injury three days prior to her expected professional debut, a preseason contest against the Indiana Fever.
The game, which would have matched up Amoore opposite reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year and NCAA all-time leading scorer Caitlin Clark, ultimately did not feature either player due to injury, and resulted in a 79-74 Fever win in overtime.
Amoore is the second consecutive WNBA draft pick to play her collegiate basketball under head coach Kenny Brooks and not be able to play in her first professional season due to an ACL injury, following Virginia Tech great Liz Kitley, who sustained an ACL tear late in the regular season of her final year in the college ranks before being selected in the second round by the Las Vegas Aces. Kitley has made Las Vegas’ roster for the 2025 WNBA season, and is expected to back up reigning WNBA Most Valuable Player A’ja Wilson.
The announcement of Amoore’s successful surgery came on opening day of the WNBA’s 29th season, which will conclude on Sept. 11 before postseason play begins. One of three Mystics rookies selected in the first round, and five overall, Amoore would have been one of four rookies on the opening day roster alongside first-round picks Sonia Citron (Notre Dame), Kiki Iriafen (Southern California) and second-round selection Lucy Olsen (Iowa).
Washington also provided an update on second-year forward Aaliyah Edwards, who has been cleared to resume on-court activities after being diagnosed with a lower back contusion. Edwards will be reevaluated in approximately two weeks.
