Practice report: Cats getting ‘ready for everything’ against Georgia’s multiple offense
▪ Ready for everything: The Georgia run game led by Nick Chubb and Sony Michel has had a lot more pass from true freshman Jacob Eason sprinkled in this season, but the Cats know the runs will come in bulk this weekend at Commonwealth Stadium. “We do know they have some type of identity with their running backs,” UK cornerback Derrick Baity said. “They’re good.” Georgia has been a hard scout, defensive coordinator D.J. Eliot said. “They’re very multiple, so that’s what makes it difficult for them,” he said. “They have a power-run game but yet they can still spread it out and throw the ball around then execute a spread-run game … you’ve got to be ready for everything.”
▪ Sights and sounds: Practice is generally over when the media comes onto the field, but every once in a while we see players putting in extra work. It was hard to miss center Jon Toth working off to the side together with backup Bunchy Stallings on technique and footwork. The two would get down in the stance, then Stallings would immediately copy what he was seeing from Toth. Offensive coordinator Eddie Gran mentioned on Tuesday that UK was getting extra reps for Stallings this week at that spot to give Toth a break. When asked about UK’s success running the ball lately, Stoops was quick to mention Toth. “He’s an extremely good player, very smart and he’s a great leader. You have to give a little credit to him.”
▪ A long time coming: Fans and media types might be looking for the moment the light bulb came on for Kentucky this season, how it recovered from losing two straight to being a game away from bowl eligibility. But Stoops said it’s not a specific thing. “I think it goes back a long way,” the coach said Wednesday on the SEC teleconference. “I don’t think any one thing changed in the past five or six weeks. I think part of this turnaround has been going on for a long time. Our players have worked extremely hard, our coaches have for many years to keep on building and doing the right things and developing our players to put them in position to win. It is very gratifying to see us play better football.”
