Kentucky’s Lynn Bowden, Max Duffy named AP first-team All-Americans

University of Kentucky players Lynn Bowden and Max Duffy were named first-team All-Americans by the Associated Press on Monday.

Bowden and Duffy each were named to the first-team offense by members of the media. Bowden was selected as an all-purpose player while Duffy was picked as a punter.

Both players won national individual awards last week. Bowden was named this year’s Paul Hornung Award winner, given annually to college football’s most versatile athlete. Duffy was awarded the Ray Guy Award, given to the nation’s top punter. They were the first UK players to win each award.

It is the second All-America nod for Duffy, who last week was named to the Walter Camp Football Foundation’s first team. That team and the AP team are two of the five All-America teams considered in determining consensus All-Americans, in addition to teams selected by the American Football Coaches Association, the Football Writers Association of America and Sporting News.

Kentucky garnered two selections to the AP’s first team last year — Josh Allen and Bunchy Stallings. Benny Snell was named to the AP’s third team in 2018. UK has had 14 unique players recognized as first-team All-Americans by the AP.

It is the first time in school history that the AP has named a UK player to its first team in consecutive seasons, and the third time that the organization has named multiple Kentucky players to the first team in the same year.

Bowden went 5-2 as UK’s quarterback after taking over at the position, accumulating 1,137 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns through those seven games. He finished the regular season with 1,235 rushing yards, 348 receiving yards, 12 total touchdowns (one receiving) and 253 return yards (200 on kickoffs).

Duffy averaged 48.6 yards on 47 punts in the regular season, the best average among all FBS punters in 2019.

Bowden last week was named to the All-Southeastern Conference’s first team by the AP and coaches. Duffy was an All-SEC first-team pick by the AP and a second-team selection by the coaches.

Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, who starred at Lafayette High School in Lexington, was named to the AP’s second team. He also was named to the WCFF’s second team.
