Former UK coach and a Kentucky native part of Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs

Two men with ties to Kentucky earned their first Super Bowl rings when the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 31-20, on Sunday night.

Former University of Kentucky assistant coach Matt House and Deon Yelder, a Louisville native who played at Western Kentucky University, are on the Chiefs’ payroll. House is the team’s linebackers coach and Yelder is a tight end on the team’s 53-man roster.

House was on Mark Stoops’ staff at Kentucky from 2016-2018. In his first season he coached inside linebackers and was the program’s special teams coordinator; he gave up special teams duties in 2017, when he became the defensive coordinator, a role he also held in 2018. House left UK last February following its 10-3 campaign in 2018.

Yelder attended Southern High School and walked on at WKU, where he didn’t play until his redshirt sophomore season in 2015. He did not record a catch until his senior season, during which he finished second on the team with 52 receptions for 688 yards and seven touchdowns. He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the New Orleans Saints in 2018 but was released by them on Oct. 3 of that year; the Chiefs signed him to their practice squad the next day and he was later that month promoted to the active roster, where he has remained.

He has mostly been a special teams contributor, but Yelder during the 2019 season caught three passes for 50 yards.
